A warning says to call a number

Real warnings from Microsoft, Apple or any real tech company never ask you to call a phone number. This is a trick.

  1. Step 1: Do not call the number. Do not click anything inside the warning.

You will see The warning may flash, beep or say your computer is locked.

  2. Step 2: Close the web page with the X at the top corner of the window.

You will see The warning goes away.

If it goes wrong If it will not close, restart the computer.

  3. Step 3: Call me before you do anything else.

You will see We check it together.

  4. Step 4: Let them onto your computer, or gave them a password? Turn the computer off. Then call me.

You will see We check the computer together before you use it again.

If it goes wrong Change that password from a different computer or phone. Change it on any other site that uses the same one.

  5. Step 5: Already called or paid? Call your bank or card company right away.

You will see They may be able to stop the payment.

If it goes wrong You can also report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
